Course Introduction
Reports on home invasions and break-ins seem to be routine these days. . Who among us has thought out what we would do in case of a home invasion or how we should respond should we come home and discover a burglar in the house? Unfortunately, today’s world has become a place where “when seconds count, the police are minutes away.”
The NRA Basics of Personal Protection In the Home course continues where the Basic Pistol or First Steps courses leave off. This course discusses the mindset and various possible methods of protecting the home. The course is not intended to give students a specific plan for all scenarios but rather to explore a variety of options, not all of which will involve the use of weapons. Each situation is different and must be judged in its own context. However, if the use of a firearm is warranted, this course will teach various techniques to give the students a flexible range of options. These options will include investigating the appropriate technique for the individual.
Personal Protection In the Home is taught in a home setting, and if desired, taught in the student’s home. We have found that the client’s personal residence provides the ideal situation in which to brainstorm and enact various scenarios for safety and feasibility.
The In the Home course uses numerous dry-fire and live-fire exercises to practice and hone shooting skills. The additional required range work is designed to be as realistic as possible.
Course Description
This course covers:
- Introduction to Defensive Shooting
- Basic Defensive Handgun Skills
- Firearms and the Law: Possession, Ownership, and the Use of Deadly Force (taught by Mr. Morgan)
- Strategies for Home Safety and Responding to a Violent Confrontation
- Selecting a Handgun for Self-Defense
- Sporting Shooting Activities and Training Opportunities
Course fee: $200 (Includes all student materials and range fees. Cost of ammunition or weapon rental is not included)
Course requirements: Students taking this course must be at least 18 years old, experienced shooters, and able to demonstrate safe gun handling and competency in its use. Students must not have been convicted of a felony.
Per NRA requirements: “The NRA Basics of Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law. It is much more than just a routine shooting course. It is important that participants have sufficient maturity and life experiences to be able to assess various situations and make mature, appropriate decisions about those situations.”
Certificate requirements: Passing score on written exam and demonstration of safe gun handling practices
