NRA Basic Pistol Course

Course Introduction

There is more to shooting a pistol or revolver than just picking up the gun and pulling the trigger. The Basics of Pistol Shooting course prepares students to own and/or use a pistol or revolver safely by introducing the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The course is taught over two sessions.

Course Description

The classroom portion of the course teaches:

  1. Safety aspects of using and handling a handgun
  2. Parts of a pistolĀ and revolver
  3. Different types of handguns
  4. Components of a cartridge
  5. Malfunctions
  6. Fundamentals of handgun shooting
  7. Range commands
  8. Shooting positions
  9. Cleaning and care of a pistol

During this session, Attorney Ric Morgan supplements the NRA curriculum with an in-depth explanation of the current local, state, and federal firearms laws. This material is not covered in the course exam.

Practical application is a one to two hour session at a safe, established shooting range using live-fire exercises during which students will practice the basic shooting fundamentals they just learned.

Course fee: $150 (Includes all student materials and range fees. Cost of ammunition or weapon rental is not included)

Course requirements: Students must not have been convicted of a felony. Minor students must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Certificate requirements: Passing score on written exam and demonstration of safe gun handling practices

Certification in this course satisfies the training requirements for a Colorado Concealed Handgun permit.
